We occasionally are asked about the ingredients we use to produce our Oils of Aloha® products. Cosmetic and skin care labeling law requires us to use names approved by the Food and Drug Administration and administered by the Cosmetics, Fragrances and Toiletry Association (CTFA). We endeavor in all cases to comply with their rules and regulations.
Aleurites Moluccana (Kukui) Seed Oil
Kukui oil is nearly 77% polyunsaturated fat - 43% linoleic acid and 33% linolenic acid. The oil is expeller pressed to exacting standards. Kukui oil quickly penetrates the stratum corneum and assists the skin in maintaining its water barrier function. It is also used in the treatment of burns and is an outstanding emollient. Macadamia Ternifolia (Macadamia) Seed Oil
Macadamia oil is also produced here in Hawaii by Oils of Aloha. The oil is used extensively in cosmetics and skin care products. It is 80% monounsaturated and very stable. The oil contains some 20% palmitoleic acid; present in the skin of the very young but seems to disappear as we age. Macadamia oil may slow the aging of the skin by acting as an antioxidant. It is also an excellent food grade oil.
Algae Extract
Used for its water binding and antioxidants functionally.
Behenyl Alcohol
A thickener and emollient in our moisturizing creams.
Biosaccharide Gum-1
A moisturizer and binder that helps with the cohesion of the moisturizing cream.
Butylene Glycol
This is a common humectant and solubilizer used in cosmetics. It is an effective solvent and coupling agent and improves the stability of cosmetic emulsions.
Caprylyl Glycol- A preservative used in our cream.
Carbomer
It is used for formulating sparkling and clear gels as well as stabilizing emulsions. It is an effective thickener and is pH sensitive.
Cetearyl Alcohol Ceteareth-20
This is a combined product that offers emulsifying and thickening properties and is used in our lotions.
Cyclopentasiloxane
A lubricant used in our lotions.
Dimethicone
This is a substance derived from silica (sand is a silica). The unique fluid properties of silicone give it a great deal of slip and in its various forms it can feel like silk on the skin, impart emolliency, and be a water-binding agent that holds up well, even when skin becomes wet.
EDTA & Disodium EDTA
A preservative used to protect our lotions from spoilage by microorganisms.
Glycerine
Vegetable glycerine moisturizes and cleanses skin, has emollient and lubricating properties. It is a humectant and has hygroscopic properties that means it actually attracts moisture from surrounding sources.
Glyceryl Stearate
This ingredient serves as an emulsifier and thickener. It is made from hardened vegetable oil and vegetable glycerine mixed with stearic acid. It is seen as a beneficial ingredient in many health and beauty products.
Hexylene Glycol
This is a humectant or humidifying and delivery ingredient used in our lotions. When used in a small amount it keeps products from melting in high heat or freezing when it is cold. It also helps active ingredients penetrate the skin.
Magnesium Myristate
A thickener used in our moisturizing cream.
Methylisothiazolinone
A preservative used in our moisturizing creams and lotions.
Phenoxyethanol Caprylyl Glycol Potassium Sorbate- A preservative used to protect our lotions and cream from spoilage by micro-organisms.
Polyglyceryl-10, Pentastearate
An emulsifier used in our cream.
Refreshing Fragrance
This fragrance is a blend of lime peel and orange oils with an undertone of musk.
Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate
Used in our moisturizing creams to retain moisture and soften the skin.
Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Acetate, DL-Alpha Tocopherol
All are antioxidants used in our kukui oils and lotions.
Triethanolamine
Used to adjust the PH of the formulation.
Xantham Gum
Used in our kukui products to thicken their consistency and as a suspending agent.
